Head Coach - Purple Group

Upon retiring from my role as an elementary school teacher after 38 years of service, “What are you going to do next?” became a familiar question from family, friends, and quite frankly, from myself. As I pondered that question, I knew I was ready to explore something new, but exactly what that was had not quite taken shape. Suggestions and ideas were offered time and time again, as most knew that I was not a couch potato!  My daughter, Sheila Cook, had heard of a great local walking/running group from a colleague, Sherry Rendon, and she encouraged me to give it a try. I’ve never been an “athletic” person, but I knew I could walk, and that is where my Fort Bend Fit adventure began. Sheila and I joined FBF in the fall of 2010, and since then, it has been a very rewarding experience. Mary Saunders provided a warm welcome to the PURPLE Group, and I soon realized after a few Saturday runs, that I knew other group members as well, including Jeff and Rosa Bryant whom I’ve known since 1978.This new adventure has afforded many benefits like teaching me the ABC’s of training in the Texas heat for distance races, and the importance of hydration, nutrition, consistency and rest. Also learning how to manage nagging injuries has been a challenge but with patience, I’ve been able to overcome.

During the past 9 years, with Coach Bobbie’s leadership and the support of many other FBF members, I have successfully completed 1 Full Marathon, 34 Half Marathons, 1 10K, and 20 5K’s. I’ve enjoyed traveling with family and friends to races all over the U.S. and even in other countries like Honduras, Mexico, and Belize. I look forward to this season in my new role where I hope to continue to motivate and encourage our members to meet or exceed their goals and become the walker/runner they never thought they could be!

When I’m not training with FBF you can find me gardening, quilting, crocheting, baking and eating Blue Bell Ice Cream.
